IT'S going to be a white-hot Christmas Day in Perth as forecasters predict a heatwave, starting on Friday.
While Britain battles blizzards, metropolitan Perth can expect a hot and muggy 38C for Christmas Day and 36C for Boxing Day.
Bureau of Meteorology forecasters say the city's maximum average of 31.6C for Christmas Day will topple, but conditions won’t be anything like the record-breaking 2007 festive period, where families packed Perth beaches as Christmas Day nudged 41C, followed by 44.2C on Boxing Day.
Last year Christmas Day was a balmy 35C.
Bureau meteorologist Rabi Rivett said the hot spell will be caused by a ridge of high pressure, which causes air to sink and warm, currently developing in the south of the state.
“The rain today and over the next couple of days is associated with the tropical low that brought the rain to Carnarvon and that will disperse over the next couple of days,” Mr Rivett said.
“There will be a high in the south of the state by Wednesday and that is going to maintain off shore winds over the next few days.
“On Christmas Day it does look like it (the trough) will stay offshore for the morning and possibly for a good part of the afternoon. Even though it might go inland late in the afternoon we could still see very high temperatures for Perth.”
