A poster named Seagull posted this comment at another board...

The thing is, we are a rapidly moving society, but we are also traditionalists, and with 2000 years of history attached to the monarchy, we like the idea of the identity that a monarchy gives us. The Queen has NO power at all apart from symbolically, however it does give a nice link to the past

Seagull is 100% WRONG when s/he says the Queen has no power. Your UK CANNOT go to war unless SHE says so. That is pretty powerful if you ask me. You need to be aware of her "power" if you are not already.

Anyway, to the anti monarchy Aussies, I say this:

Why change, for changes sake?

Where is the logic in that? When systems work the best thing to do is leave it that way. Naturally adjustments within the system evolve but "change for change's sake," shouldn't be an option. The only reason the pollies wanted to remove a monarchy was to shift the power of a just monarch to their flawed selves. It won't be a "commonwealth" then, will it? And they're trying to do it in the sneakiest of ways. The Queen is committed to death in her duties. In her 80's she still goes to the office everyday and puts in a full days work. Pollies can and do, only 4 yr stints and then milk the system for the rest of their sorry lives and they DON'T work for their public funded handouts. If you want change, there is a good place to start. Start with voicing horror at unjust payouts to politicians.

Former Senator Natasha Stott Despoja receives over $70,000.00 a year for the rest of her life despite the fact she only did two terms in a party that didn't even score 5% of the Australian vote [a now debunked political party] and despite the fact she works and her husband works. The woman isn't even 40, for crying out loud. You cry for change, change that!

If you want "independence" then you need a bigger military and bigger military costs big bucks, hence, your taxes will treble and you'll need to import more foreigners to bump your population and I personally do not want anymore foreigners invading us putting more pressure on the fragile eco-system like water supplies. Don't rely on the yanks to pull you out of the **** if a war breaks out. They're broke.

So **** what?

She obviously employs people to run the McD burgers AND it is an asset and can be "resold" and whose tourist dollar bring in millions and millions of pounds. I doubt England would even have a tourist industry if the Queen wasn't there.

What do you hate about it?

My feelings are these, I am so glad that my greatgrandfather's father's parents decided to set sail for Oz back in 1832 ....and the other grandparents, grandparent followed over the rest of the 1800's....

It is hard to work out.....it all gets complicated.....but I am also proud they came from the UK and why shouldn't we be?

Same could be said of the Dutch.

Seems the Indonesians didn't like Indonesia a Dutch colony or South Africans.

Australia has been a great success though.

South Africa was British.

Not always, they had to fight wars for it with the Dutch.

Main article: First Boer War
The First Boer War (1880–1881), also known as the "Transvaal War," was a relatively brief conflict in which Boer settlers successfully resisted a British attempt to annex the Transvaal, and re-established an independent republic.`

Main article: Second Boer War
The Second Boer War (1899–1902), by contrast, was a lengthy war involving large numbers of troops from many British possessions, which ended with the conversion of the Boer republics into British colonies (with a promise of limited self-government). These colonies later formed part of the Union of South Africa.
