This is what they are really like folks

A LAUGHING police officer told a drunk Aboriginal man to sing and dance while he filmed the act, with the footage later posted on YouTube.

A LAUGHING police officer told a drunk Aboriginal man to sing and dance while he filmed the act, with the footage later posted on YouTube.

The video shows a heavily intoxicated Aborigine lying on the ground in the Northern Territory  town of Katherine.

He starts singing The Rivers of Babylon at the behest of a police officer who is filming the incident.

A second officer then drags the man to his feet while the officer taking the footage laughs and tells him to dance and say "Happy Birthday Blake".

The Aboriginal man, who is staggering and appears close to falling, continues to sing and dances about in a circle before being directed towards a police car.

The officer filming the incident then turns the camera on himself and says: "This s... is f....d up, f....d up''.

The video has prompted outrage from some online viewers.

"Disgusting is not the word for this," says one blogger.

"I have reported this to the minister of police. Sick and tired of so called police who abuse their power."

Others described the video as "racist" and called for the officer to be sacked or jailed.

Northern Territory police issued a statement yesterday saying the officer who filmed the event had received counselling after an internal investigation found his treatment of the man to be "humiliating and demeaning".

It said the matter was investigated in December last year by the Ethical and Professional Standards Command.

"A member was counselled and police acknowledge that the making of the video and posting it on YouTube was highly inappropriate," said a spokeswoman.

She said the other officer had not been reprimanded.

Katherine Country Liberals local member Willem Westra Van Holthe told ABC radio in Katherine that the officer had not conducted himself in a professional manner.

"It's probably a breach of privacy in regards to taking the video,'' said the former policeman.

"Certainly I think it's inappropriate to allow it to get onto the internet."

But other online bloggers used racist remarks to defend the video's content.

"No matter how u cut it the Aborigine) is f.....' hilarious," said one.

The man who posted the video, who appears not to be one of the police officers involved, told online critics he would take it down if the Aboriginal man asked him to.

"But I'm more than certain he would rather his 15 minutes of fame," he wrote.

"It's what he did that made it funny - not the colour of his skin."

NT police said a number of attempts had been made to remove the video from the website but they had been unsuccessful.

Comment was being sought from the NT government.

We aren't traditionally a Rugby league state....that was traditionally played in New South Whales and Queensland....all the southern states play Australia Football League [aussie rules] which is like Gaelic football but the ball isn't round, it is oblong...My family have always been involved with Rugby Union or AFL.
