At least for a month.
It doesn't look good for Chrysler.

Unfortunately, their only hope now is to merge with GM.

The auto workers have a contract which specifies that they get paid even if they don't work. So they get full pay despite the shutdown.
Where Chrysler will save money on is the cost of the car parts and the utilities. Only 10% of the cost of the car is the pay for the workers..the rest is the cost of parts and utilities and transportation.
Basically, the dealerships aren't selling cars anyway...so they don't need new ones delivered.
Chrysler needs the money from the government to pay their bills and more importantly, they need to find a less expensive way to build their cars and actually build cars the people want to buy.

interesting chart/break down i found. Motor city is the U.S.A. It's not just about Detroit. The auto industry employs workers in every state - including Alaska and Hawaii. More than 2 million jobs - from manufacturing, to parts, to auto dealers - depend on carmakers for their pay. http://money.cnn.com/news/specials/storysupplement/stateautoworkers/

The problem is that their customers can't get the loans. Chrysler said they're losing between 20-25% of their sales due to refused credit.

I'm driving a 16-year old car and can't get a loan for a new car.
Perhaps the big auto manufacturers should make cheaper cars.
Remember the VW Beetle? I don't see why every new model year the cars have to be so radically different and "improved". Just stick to one basic design and sell the cars cheap and everyone will have a car in their garage, and there will be a chicken or two in every pot.
This sounds like the beginning of another Great Depression.

America is in a depression....they're just not allowed to use the word, "depression."
that is what they're saying on our TVs.

My company isn't doing very well either. I have been there 6 years and I have never seen it so slow.
One of my coworkers just completed his 40th year with the company and he also said he has NEVER seen it as slow as this year. Kinda scary if you are a fearful worrisome type of person.
I don't think I am.
