Hi Cathy, Bella, Goats, TWaP, Omnia, etc.
Merry Christmas to everyone down under.
I just woke up after only a few hours sleep. My ex-wife called to see how things were going. Our son is over here with me, doing the usual computer stuff, now he's fast asleep and I can't get back to sleep.
I am concerned that we are in a Great Depression like the one my parents lived through. I sometimes feel like it affected me, rubbed off on me, as I've been in at least a mild state of depression for most of my life.
And I am ancient. I remember the name Obi from one of the earlier groups.
I just read about this theory called the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis that says people behave a certain way based on the language they speak, which means the French and Italians will never have a stable government, because they are incapable of doing so, Slavs will never agree amongst themselves and have any sort of united front, Germans are organized and concerned with order, rules, laws, etc, and English speakers are supposed to have the best of the lot, a combination of the best of the Germanic and Romance characteristics.
I wonder how that hypothesis applies to the Chinese, Japanese, and Koreans.
I know some people maintain a "stiff upper lip" regarding showing of emotion in public, particularly the Brits. I've also heard much about the Japanese wanting to do anything to "save face", even committing ritual suicide when honor demands it. I suspect the Koreans don't go quite that far.
I am not sure if there was anything good about the Cultural Revolution. But the Chinese have a history going back thousands of years, and they seem to have a good culture, until the 20th century when the communist thing got going. I think it would have been better for them to remain backward. But who can say?
As a general tendency, I tend to dislike the young and brash elements of any society, the punks, the gang members, the rappers, etc. lol Maybe I just don't like young people now that I've grown old. lol
Gotta run
