I think Obama tests these things out on his webpage. If it generates a lot of criticism he then has the webpage altered to say something else.
He did the same thing with his involvement with the Acorn group. At first he said he was never connected with them at all. Then when it came out he trained their people, he said he was never "employed" by the Acorn group.
