Rather than be pissheads and petrol sniffers:

Aboriginal people must get jobs, says Opposition leader Tony Abbott

FEDERAL Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says indigenous Australians must get jobs, even if it means picking up rubbish.
Indigenous adults and children alike must be engaged in work and education, Mr Abbott told the Australia Unlimited conference of business leaders in Melbourne today.

So many people are spending so much money and time and effort to make a difference and the progress is so painfully slow, Mr Abbott said.

We just have to get the kids to school. They just have to go.

And similarly with the adults. There may not be a great job for them but whatever there is, they just have to do it.

And if it's picking up rubbish around the community, it just has to be done.

Mr Abbott, who described himself as a "moderate, reasonably sensitive, contemporary Australian, said he did not wish to impose his own standards on communities but suggested they might be universal standards that every human could aspire to.

We have to come up with what are practical, achievable solutions and then we have got to take the public with us.

Earlier today, Mr Abbott promised a $1.5 billion investment in mental health services if the coalition is elected to government.

And this morning, Mr Abbott featured in a fiery breakfast radio stunt, when he participated in a ceremonial burning of budgie smugglers.

Pauline Hanson suggested that they might 'clean the place up a bit' and was howled down by the do-gooders.
