The US Army has confirmed that at least 12 people have been shot dead and 31 wounded in a shooting incident at the Fort Hood military base in Texas.

The Army says one of the shooters - a US soldier - has been killed while two other soldiers who are suspects have been arrested.

One shooter is dead and two others have been apprehended
President Obama calls shooting a "horrific outburst of violence"
Shooting took place before graduation ceremony

A Pentagon spokesman says it is too soon know whether there is any link to any sort of battle stress or the repeated deployments that many of men and women at the base have been enduring.

At this stage there is no indication at all that this was part of any sort of terrorist plot.

US media reports say two gunmen dressed in military uniforms opened fire at the largest military installation in America, just before the start of a graduation ceremony and it is not yet clear if the victims were civilians or military personnel.

Army spokesman at the Pentagon, Lieutenant Colonel Nathan Banks, says one of the shootings happened at a personnel and medical processing centre and the second shooting happened at a theatre on the sprawling base.

Fort Hood is the largest US military base in the world and is home to like first cavalry division and the fourth infantry division - units that have seen extensive duty in Iraq.

The US Army is suffering a record high suicide rate and there has been plenty of other signs of stress from fighting two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan

The Fort Hood base is in lockdown and there is a notice on its website alerting personnel that this is not a drill, that it is an emergency situation, that all units at the base have been ordered to account for all personnel.

United States President Obama told a press conference that he will stay informed with a constant stream of updates, reminding everyone to keep Fort Hood men and women in their thoughts and prayers.

"These are men and women who have made selfless and courageous decisions... it's difficult enough when we lose these brave Americans overseas. It is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on American soil," he said.

"We are working with the Pentagon, FBI, Department of Homeland Security to ensure that Fort Hood is secure.

"In the meantime I would ask all Americans to keep the men and women of Fort Hood in our prayers.

"I want all of you to know that as commander in chef, there is no greater honour and also no greater responsibility for me to make sure that the extraordinary men and women are properly cared for and their safety and security is properly provided for."
